The first phase of "Hong Kong Paintings in Sai Yuen Lane" exhibition at Sun Museum was concluded successfully on December 8, 2024. Following the positive reception, the second phase of "Hong Kong Paintings in Sai Yuen Lane" was officially unveiled on December 18, 2024.
The second phase features 66 works by 48 artists, featuring a wide range of artworks in different media including oil, watercolour, pastel, and marker paintings. The exhibition runs from December 19, 2024, to February 16, 2025, showcasing diverse themes such as portraits, natural landscapes, and Hong Kong street life.
Artist Stephen LEUNG ’s "My City", initially mistaken as a photograph, depicts the bustling streets of Hong Kong in a hyper-realistic approach by employing field of depth technique in photography. Artist CHAN Chiu Lung's oil painting "New Pier Under Lion Rock" captures the Kai Tak Cruise Terminal under clear skies, with the sky and sea blending seamlessly into a harmonious whole. Artist FUNG Chim examines the cityscape from a different angle in "Amaryllis", where the entire canvas is filled with bamboo leaves against a backdrop of a dilapidated iron gate, creating a desolate ambiance. Artist Rainbow TSE's "Neon City" uses light and shadow and vibrant colours to construct the unique night scene of Hong Kong. Artist HO Siu Chung interprets the cityscape in an abstract style with "Impression of Sai Yuen Lane I", cleverly using Western oil techniques to evoke the feel of traditional Chinese ink art. This stunning piece features a seaside in the foreground, an urban streetscape in the middle ground, and a night sky in the background. Other than landscape, dweller also plays a vital role in urban life. Artist LIU Cheng Mui's "After Glow No.2" vividly depicts a person’s head and hands in motion with soft colour tones, highlighting the beauty of natural form.
To complement the second phase of the exhibition, Sun Museum will host two live art demonstration workshops, allowing participants to gain a deeper understanding of artists' concepts and techniques through witnessing the creative process. Sun Museum has invited artist Ma Chuen to conduct an oil painting demonstration on January 11, 2025, and artist Lao U Kei to host a watercolor demonstration on February 8, 2025. Additionally, there will be a "Fai Chun" workshop on January 18, 2025, with calligraphy teacher Dusty Calligraphy (Kinson Chan) to celebrate the Lunar New Year with traditional calligraphy, adding festive atmosphere through art.
